“I Need a Logo” Usually Means Something Else

A logo might be where the conversation starts. It’s rarely where the real work starts.

I hear some version of “I need a logo” pretty regularly. And sometimes, that really is what someone needs.

But sometimes it isn’t.

Once we start talking, we may find that the business has grown, but the way it presents itself hasn’t grown with it. Things have been added over time. Pieces don’t quite connect anymore. Or what people see simply doesn’t feel like the business that’s actually there.

That’s when I want to know more.

The logo might not be the problem.

A logo is important. It gives people something to recognize and helps establish the visual identity of a business. But changing the logo doesn’t automatically fix everything around it.

Sometimes the real issue is clarity. Maybe the business has changed. Maybe the message has gotten muddy. Maybe there are too many things competing for attention. Or maybe the pieces simply stopped feeling like they belong together.

Before I start designing, I’d rather figure that out.

Sometimes the answer is smaller than you think.

Not every conversation needs to turn into a complete rebrand. Sometimes you really do need a new logo. Sometimes the identity is fine and the website needs work. Sometimes everything is there, but it needs to be brought back together.

I’m not interested in making a project bigger just for the sake of making it bigger. I’m interested in finding the thing that actually needs attention.

Because once that's clear, the design has a reason for being there.

That’s the difference I care about.

Clarity leads. Design follows.

That line has become more than a tagline for RC Digital Works. It’s a pretty good description of how I want to approach the work.

Understand what we're trying to solve first.

Then make it look good.
